If 50 is the passing mark, the country scored low on important aspects of national pride. Averages for the Social Weather Station’s nine-year survey show the country failing in indicators of socio-political relevance, and barely satisfactory in crucial governance and economic indicators. Disturbing is the fact that the armed forces, supposedly a source of great pride in a sovereign nation, has a very low average score.
On the other hand, the highest score is given to pride in sports achievement, unsurprisingly, recalling to mind Manny Pacquiao and the others. Ironically, though, sports remains underfunded and largely unexplored, both by the government and private sector. Filipino gymnast Michael Christian Martinez lone participant in this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi comes to mind.
